A hardwood floor is a 50-year decision, and installation is where it’s won or lost. We acclimate every board, prep every subfloor, and install nail-down, glue-down or floating systems to the manufacturer’s spec — so your warranty actually holds. Choose from solid and engineered hardwood from names like Mirage, Mullican and Somerset in our Marcellus showroom.
Solid hardwood can be refinished the most times and is ideal for living areas and bedrooms. Engineered hardwood is more stable over concrete, radiant heat and in basements. We stock both and will tell you straight which fits your house.
Most single rooms take one to two days; whole-floor projects typically run three to five. We give you a schedule in writing with the estimate.
Yes — furniture moving, tear-out and haul-away can all be included in your quote. Tell us what you need when we measure.
We can often blend new boards into existing floors, or refinish the whole area for a uniform look. Bring photos into the showroom and we’ll walk you through the options.
Sometimes. Hardwood can go over a sound, flat wood subfloor or, in some cases, over existing wood flooring. We don’t install over carpet, cushioned vinyl or anything that flexes. We’ll tell you at the measure whether tear-out is needed.
Perpendicular to the floor joists is the strongest orientation for solid strip and plank. If the look you want requires running parallel, we add subfloor reinforcement so the floor stays flat and quiet.
Hardwood is a thirty-year decision, so we slow the choice down. Before anyone talks price, we ask how the room is used, who lives there (dogs, kids, a home office chair that never stops rolling) and what’s underneath the floor you have now. Those answers point toward a species, a width, a finish and a construction type that will still look right in 2050.
Species. Red and white oak remain the workhorses of Syracuse-area homes for good reason: they’re hard enough for family life, take stain evenly and match the original floors in most pre-war houses. Hard maple reads cleaner and more modern but shows scratches in darker stains. Hickory is among the hardest domestic species and hides wear with its bold grain. Walnut and cherry are softer and warmer — beautiful in a dining room or den, less forgiving in a mudroom.
Width. Classic 2¼” strip flooring suits older colonials and bungalows. Wide plank (5″ and up) is what most new builds and renovations are asking for now. Wider solid boards move more with our humidity swings, which is one reason we often suggest engineered construction for planks over 5″.
Prefinished or site-finished. Prefinished boards arrive with a factory-cured finish, so there’s no sanding dust or fumes and you can walk on the floor the day it’s installed. Site-finished (unfinished) hardwood is sanded and coated in your home, which gives a seamless, flat surface and lets us match an existing floor or mix a custom stain. We install both and will tell you honestly which fits your project.

For a rough national reference, installed hardwood commonly runs somewhere in the high single digits to mid-teens per square foot, materials included — but your home, not an average, sets the price. Put felt pads on every chair and table leg, keep a mat at each exterior door, and sweep or vacuum (hard-floor setting, no beater bar) often — grit is what dulls a finish. Clean with a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner and a barely damp microfiber mop; skip steam mops, vinegar and oil soaps. Keep indoor humidity in the 35–55% range year-round and your floor will stay flat and tight. Our winter-specific advice is in protecting hardwood from road salt and slush.
