We stock hardwood we’re willing to put our name under — because we’re usually the ones installing it. That means honest talk about which species, cuts and finishes survive Central New York’s dry winters and humid summers, and which ones just look good in a catalog.
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood, refinishable for generations — best above grade, over wood subfloors. Engineered hardwood is real wood over a stable core — the right call over concrete, radiant heat and in finished basements. We stock both, and the showroom is the fastest way to feel the difference. Grade describes appearance, not quality. Select/clear grades have few knots and consistent color. #1 common and character grades show knots, mineral streaks and color variation — perfect for rustic and farmhouse looks, and usually less expensive.
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood, typically ¾” thick, nailed to a wood subfloor. It can be sanded and refinished many times. It isn’t recommended below grade or directly on concrete.
Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood top layer bonded to a stable plywood or composite core. It moves less with humidity, can go over concrete and radiant heat, and makes wide planks practical. Refinishing depends on the thickness of the wear layer.
